A renowned German pianist paid a return visit to the Hub City to perform with its orchestra. Andreas Boyde joined music director Sarah Ioannides and the Spartanburg Philharmonic to play Tchaikovsky’s “fiery” concerto for the orchestra’s 2014-2015 season opener. The orchestra also performed a famous overture by Danish composer Carl Nielsen to provide the “sun” in the concert’s title, while the “water” was represented by Smetana’s famous symphonic poem from the cycle Ma Vlast – “My Country.” Then it’s over to Columbia for some highlights from a concert by the USC Symphony Orchestra, including Mendelssohn’s ever-popular concerto and symphonic dances from Leonard Bernstein’s first venture into the Broadway musical.
